Many of us don’t take care of ourselves because we think we’re too busy and we’re attached to our bad habits or addictions.
Now, we strive to keep our kids away from harmful substances and behaviors, of course, and we spend time every day doing things to show our spouses that we care for them, and we stay involved in the lives of our children and just spend time with them–all because we love them. These things we have the time and energy for because, when it comes down to it, we love others better than we love ourselves.
I’d like to put forth the idea, though, that one of the best ways to show that you care for your loved ones is to care for yourself. When you neglect or abuse yourself, you harm the people whom you love because they hurt when you do. Whether it’s an issue fitness, diet or eating disorders, or an addiction (behavioral or substance, legal or illegal), take the time and make the effort to improve your health–and love your family and friends enough to love yourself as well.
I have a new office (switched to a smaller room with my son), and everything is working (except my own @#$# computer), and so I’m in, more or less, a “happy place.”

I’ll be auctioning the galley proofs of MUSIC OF THE NIGHT to help. Because of a publisher mix up, I have the entire thing, including what’s usually sent into the publisher and destroyed, so this is probably the only time in my career that there will be preserved and entire author proofs with all my markings and snide comments about the copy editor and spilled soft drink on them. So if you think I’m going to be worth something some day OR you just want the book early, this is your chance.
I really, really enjoyed my time in Maryland even if the house was about the size of a postage stamp and had no yard, but I’m glad to be back. The Bear NEEDS a big yard. I NEED The Bear to HAVE a big yard.
Now, if only there were fewer four-foot rattlesnakes in it…
